Where do I begin? Midcoast Bedlam was the first cogent band I was involved with after i returned to Cedar Rapids from art school, Michael was writing tons of tunes and we would rehearse them over and over, auditioning drummers and trying to get them recorded. The band underwent a few personel changes over the years, but the line-up that stands out the most, and is the one most people will remember was Micahel Bolton on Bass and vocals, Matt West on drums and chaos, and me (Kipp Wieland) on guitar, keyboards, vocals, and whatever else we needed. There were a lot of peripheral characters involved too: Kraze and DIno, Fat Tony, Richard Wright, Golden Lee Smith - It actually became the "Midcoast Bedlam Art Club" as we spent just as much, if not more time doing anything to keep from letting the boredom and musical stagnation of the 80's get the best of us.
The recordings that exist to this day unfortunately all inhabit mile upon mile of magnetic recording tape, and the shortcomings and artifacts of 1980's technology will be easily detected in these examples.
The group first manifest itself in 1985 and met its fate sometime in 1992. Eventually Charles Hasson took the place of Matt on drums and Craig Erickson joined us for a while before the group permanently disbanded. Like I said - The recordings are too numerous to account for right off the cuff, but here is a cross section of the Bedlam sound:
