Divine Intervention
It was the Spring of 1978 when Kipp Wieland first met Michael Bolton. Mike was playing the bass guitar in a rock combo with a couple of neighborhood kids and Wieland heard the sound and wandered right up to where the rehearsal was taking place.
The two have been involved in several different and varied musical undertakings on and off ever since, including Heavy Metal, R&B, Soul, Oldies, and Classic Rock bands.
Recording and writing were always happening it seemed, and this would become very instrumental in the current manifestation of the musical collaboration of Bolton and Wieland: DIV (Divine Intervention).
Originally going by the name Digistar (they changed their name as a group from the U.K. had already laid claim to the name), Mike and Kipp worked feverishly composing electronic dance music compositions (many featuring the vocals of Bolton's daughter
Mijha) with the intention of having them pressed on to vinyl for DJ's to use in their performances. This was after Bolton had made Wieland aware of the Acid software some time in 2000 that they continue to use to this day.
It was in 2007, around Halloween when Bolton contacted Wieland raving about another program called Ableton Live. He thought it would be a new, interesting tool to use in the creation of their
original music. It turned out to be the beginning of a pivotal point in the history of DIV, creating purely by accident, a new performance tool that allowed the two to mix other artists' music with theirs and also activate as many peripheral MIDI devices(sequencers, drum machines, and grooveboxes) as were desired.
Bolton asked Wieland to come up with an alternative system to his traditional two-turntable DJ set up. What developed was a very odd, unique, and fascinating collection of gadgets (many used in totally different ways than intended by the manufacturers) that could allow this combination of musical sources to continue for days on end, theoretically - all while utilizing no CDJ decks, turntables, or even headphones!
The system can be seen in action in the following video:

Since the following video was shot, we have decided to rid ourselves of the Spectralis II. The main reason was that it was not following the MIDI clock signal from Ableton that we ran through our X Station, and we really didn't want to say goodbye to the Quasimidi raveolution as part of the live system. The Spectralis is a fantastic sounding synth, and it does follow a MIDI clock. The clock problem originated in how our system is configured.
